The Xiphosura, more commonly known as the horseshoe crab, is an intriguing creature that has roamed Earth’s oceans for over 450 million years. This remarkable resilience has earned it the moniker “living fossil,” a testament to its evolutionary success. While their name might suggest a close relationship to crustaceans like crabs and lobsters, the Xiphosura actually belongs to a separate subphylum within the Arthropoda phylum – Chelicerata.

These fascinating creatures are easily recognizable thanks to their distinctive horseshoe-shaped carapace, which acts as a protective shield. This hardened shell is typically brownish-gray in color and can range in size from 10 inches (25 cm) to over 2 feet (60 cm) in length, depending on the species. These trilobites are transparent and resemble miniature versions of the adult Xiphosura. Juveniles continue to molt as they grow, eventually reaching maturity within 9 to 12 years.

Reproduction is a fascinating spectacle involving elaborate courtship rituals. Males use specialized appendages on their legs called pedipalps to grasp the female’s carapace. They then follow the female as she searches for a suitable nesting site.

Once the female selects a location, she digs a nest in the sand and lays her eggs. The male then fertilizes the eggs, completing the reproductive cycle. Interestingly, only about one in every 100 horseshoe crab larvae survives to adulthood.
